Indian director Payal Kapadia continues to elevate the nation's profile internationally. Following her triumph at the Cannes Film Festival with the Grand Prix for her film 'All We Imagine As Light' (AWIAL), she has made her return to the prestigious event in 2025, this time serving as a jury member.
Gratitude for AWIAL's Recognition
In a recent discussion at the festival, Kapadia expressed her appreciation for the acclaim 'All We Imagine As Light' has garnered. She acknowledged the significant role that international recognition played in promoting the film, stating, “Having our film showcased at Cannes and receiving such acknowledgment, along with the media coverage, was instrumental in its distribution back home. I am truly thankful. As a filmmaker, it’s essential for your work to reach audiences both domestically and abroad, making this recognition a tremendous advantage for me.”
Plans for a Trilogy
During the conversation, Kapadia revealed her ambition to create a trilogy centered around Mumbai, with two additional films currently in development. She clarified that these upcoming projects will feature entirely new characters. She shared, “I am currently focused on two more films that explore my city, Mumbai. I envision a trilogy, but each film will introduce different characters. Mumbai is a city rich in complexity and contradictions, and there’s still so much for me to uncover before I venture into other themes.”
Overview of 'All We Imagine As Light'
The narrative of 'All We Imagine As Light' follows nurse Prabha, whose life is turned upside down by an unexpected gift from her estranged husband. Simultaneously, her younger roommate Anu grapples with finding privacy in the crowded city for her relationship. Together, they embark on a road trip to a coastal town, where a mystical forest serves as a backdrop for their dreams to unfold.
